Botleaze Wood

Walk into Botleaze Wood and you're immediately surrounded by the kind of proper woodland that feels genuinely remote, even though Bradford-on-Avon is just down the road. Ancient trees, dappled light filtering through the canopy, the smell of damp earth and leaf mulch - it's the sort of place where you actually hear birdsong instead of traffic.

The woodland itself is manageable for family groups, though younger children might find the uneven terrain a bit challenging on muddy days. Walkers will find it rewarding; there are decent paths threading through, and the whole thing takes about an hour to explore without rushing. It's not a manicured attraction with facilities or interpretation boards - this is working woodland, the kind you stumble across rather than plan for.

Geologically, the area has that distinctive Cotswolds-meets-Wiltshire character, with patches of ancient forest mixed in among working farmland. If you're basing yourself at Yellowtail Camping just four miles away, Botleaze Wood makes an excellent morning or late-afternoon walk when the light's good. There's no formal entrance or admission fee as far as we can tell - you just turn up and go in, which is rather lovely.

Best visited in autumn when the leaf colour is properly dramatic, or spring when everything's coming back to life. Summer can be thick with mosquitoes, and winter's when you appreciate how exposed some of the paths become. Worth the detour if you're exploring the Bradford-on-Avon area and fancy something more genuine than a manicured forest park.
