Boston Unitarian Chapel

The chapel sits on South Street in Boston like a confident statement of 18th-century dissent. Built in 1763, it's one of the oldest Unitarian chapels still in use anywhere, which matters if you care about that sort of thing - and you probably should if you're interested in how religious thought shifted in Georgian England.

What strikes you first is how austere it is inside. No unnecessary decoration, no gilded anything. The simple pews, the gallery running round three sides, the pulpit positioned front and centre - this was a space designed for listening and thinking, not genuflecting. It's genuinely affecting if you're into architectural history or the nonconformist tradition. Less so if you're after ten minutes of casual sightseeing.

The chapel works best combined with a broader Boston wander - the town's medieval church of St Botolph is equally impressive and utterly different in character. You could easily spend a morning with both. Admission details aren't always obvious, so ring ahead or check locally.
