Bossington Park

Rolling chalk downland and ancient woodland - that's what you're getting at Bossington Park near Stockbridge. It's a proper Hampshire nature reserve that doesn't announce itself loudly, which is exactly why it works so well.

The park sprawls across grassland with walking routes threading through scrubby woodland and open meadows. In spring and early summer the wildflowers take over - lots of orchids if you know where to look. Butterflies everywhere in decent weather. It's not a dramatic landscape, but it has the quiet, understated appeal that makes you want to sit down and actually observe things rather than tick a box.

This is squarely for walkers and natural history types. Families with very small children will find it fine for a morning outing - there's space to move about - but it lacks playground facilities or dramatic attractions that keep under-eights engaged for hours. Bring binoculars if you're into birds. The reserve attracts some decent species, particularly in autumn and winter migration periods.

Allow two hours for a proper walk around the main paths, though you could do a short loop in forty minutes. The ground gets muddy after rain, so waterproof boots aren't optional in winter.

It pairs nicely with a stay at The Meadow Glamping just 2.2 miles away. From there you're positioned well for exploring the Itchen Valley, though Bossington itself is the real draw if you want to get out on foot without fighting crowds. Stockbridge, the nearest town, has decent pubs and cafes for afterwards.
