Borstal Baptist Church

The small Baptist chapel at Borstal, just outside Aylesford, is one of those places you'd walk past without a second glance if you didn't know what you were looking at. It's a proper slice of Victorian nonconformist history - the kind of building that tells you everything about 19th-century religious life in a rural corner of Kent.

Inside, the chapel retains much of its original character. High box pews, a simple pulpit, and the kind of sparse dignity that defines these independent congregations. There's no grand decoration, no show - just honest craftsmanship and the genuine faith that built it. You won't need more than half an hour here, maybe less if the doors happen to be locked (which they often are at smaller chapels like this). If you're camping nearby - either at Kits Coty Glamping or Badgells Wood - this is a decent leg-stretch walk from your pitch, particularly if you're exploring the Medway Valley's religious heritage. Combine it with a wander around Aylesford itself and the nearby medieval priory, and you've got a solid afternoon. Don't expect crowds or visitor facilities. That's rather the point.
