Borraichill Mor, dun site

Getting to Borraichill Mor means leaving your car and committing to a proper walk across moorland on the Isle of Islay. What you find at the end is a Iron Age dun - essentially the stone foundations of a fortified settlement that's been sitting here for nearly 2,000 years, slowly being reclaimed by heather and weather.

The site itself is fairly minimal. You're looking at defensive stone walls arranged in concentric rings, with the outer rampart still rising to a reasonable height in places. It's not Tintagel or anything - no dramatic cliffs, no visitor centre, no café selling Islay whisky shortbread. But that's rather the point. This is archaeology as it actually exists most of the time: quiet, overlooked, requiring genuine effort to reach.

Historically minded walkers will find it compelling. You're standing in a space where someone built fortifications because they needed protection - enough to suggest wealth, enough to suggest threat. The views across the moorland are substantial, though moorland scenery divides opinion sharply.

If you're staying at Islay Glamping Pods - just over two miles away - this makes sense as a morning or afternoon excursion, particularly if you're interested in Iron Age settlement patterns across the Hebrides. But don't kid yourself it's a casual stroll. The walk is boggy in places, the ground uneven, and there's zero infrastructure on arrival. Bring proper boots. Come when the weather's settled. And go because you genuinely want to see an ancient fort, not because you feel you ought to tick something off.
