Borough Hill

The walk up Borough Hill rewards you with proper views across Nottinghamshire's rolling landscape - on a clear day you can see for miles. It's a genuine viewpoint rather than a manicured attraction, which means the experience depends entirely on weather and timing.

The hill itself rises above the surrounding countryside with a steep final push to the summit. Once you're up there, the 360-degree panorama justifies the effort. The climb takes about 20 minutes from the base, so it's manageable for most people but not a stroll. Kids will either love the scramble to the top or grumble about their legs halfway through - depends on the age group.

There's no visitor infrastructure here, which is either brilliant or disappointing depending on your mood. No café, no gift shop, no interpretive panels explaining what you're looking at. You get the view and you get peace. Go early morning or late afternoon when the light's better and fewer people are about.

Wear decent boots if it's been wet - the path gets muddy and the slope's bit steep for slipping about on.
