Booth's Wood is the sort of place that reminds you why people fell in love with rambling in the first place - no visitor centre fuss, no signposted trails with interpretation boards every fifty yards.

Winding paths snake through the trees with enough variety to keep serious walkers engaged for a good two hours. You'll spot the occasional dog walker from nearby villages, but it's rarely crowded even on weekends. Families with younger children might find the terrain a bit challenging in places - some sections get properly muddy after rain.

The wood sits conveniently between several holiday parks including Alton's Star Camping site and Glencote Caravan Park, making it an excellent morning expedition before the afternoon's activities. Dog owners staying at nearby Intake Farm will particularly appreciate having this woodland practically on their doorstep.

Bring proper walking boots and don't expect facilities - this is old-school woodland exploration. The silence here feels earned after navigating the busier attractions around Alton Towers. Best visited early morning when mist still clings to the lower branches and you might catch sight of the resident deer before they retreat deeper into the trees.
