Bonstone Wood

The woodland around Bonstone sits quietly on the edge of the Ribble Valley, a proper slice of Lancashire forest that doesn't shout about itself. Walking through here, you're among mature trees and soft forest floor - the kind of place where you actually hear birdsong rather than just assume it's there. It's neither vast nor dramatic, but it's genuine woodland with decent paths that loop through without getting confusing.

This works best for walkers and families after a couple of hours in the fresh air rather than a full day's expedition. The trees are tall enough to feel like you've actually gone somewhere, but close enough to Clitheroe that you can head into town for lunch if the weather turns. It's a low-commitment woodland wander - the sort of thing that makes sense if you're based at Brickhouse Caravan Park or Calder Farm and want to stretch your legs without driving far.

In autumn it's worth the detour; the colour comes through properly. Spring's decent too when the undergrowth gets lively. Summer can feel a bit green and samey if you're honest, and it gets muddy after rain like most Lancashire woodland does. There's nothing fancy here - no visitor centre, no facilities that I'm aware of, just trees and paths. That's exactly the point. It's free and you can turn up whenever suits. Allow a couple of hours if you're ambling, less if you're just after fresh air between other plans in the area.
