Bonnyton Hill

A fairly modest hill walk from Arbroath that rewards you with proper Highland views once you've made the effort up. Bonnyton Hill isn't going to exhaust you - it's a manageable climb for families and casual walkers - but there's a moment near the top where you suddenly realise how far you can see across Aberdeenshire when the weather plays ball.

The walk itself is straightforward. You're looking at roughly an hour there and back depending on your pace, with decent enough paths most of the way. The ground can get boggy after rain, so proper boots aren't just a suggestion. What makes it work is the views rather than any particular feature on the summit itself. On a clear day you get a real sense of the lie of the land - the North Sea visible one way, the hills rolling inland the other.

History enthusiasts might find themselves underwhelmed. It's not a dramatic outcrop or an ancient fortification, just a decent vantage point that rewards walkers willing to climb it. That said, kids generally enjoy the straightforward nature of it - no scrambling required, and there's something satisfying about reaching the top.

Free to access, naturally. Best tackled in the morning when you've got good light and the weather tends to be clearer.
