Bonner's Saltings

The Blackwater estuary transforms into something rather special where Bonner's Saltings spreads across the marshland east of Colchester. This is proper Essex wetland - the kind of place where tidal creeks wind between banks of salt-tolerant grasses and you'll spot wading birds picking their way through the mud. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which is rather the point. You come here for the walk, the light, and the sense that you've stumbled onto something unglamorous and genuinely wild.

Walkers get the most from Bonner's Saltings. The network of paths lets you wander for an hour or ramble for three, depending on mood and tide times - and tides matter here. Birdwatchers arrive with binoculars before dawn. Photographers love the wide-open space and moody skies. Families with restless toddlers might find it a bit exposed and flat - there's nowhere to shelter and precious little to actually do beyond walk and look.

It's free access across the marshes. Go in autumn or winter when migrant birds pass through, or spring when things are nesting. Summer can feel a touch bleak and the midges don't help.

If you're based at Eastland Meadows Country Park or Lee Wick Farm Cottages just up the road, Bonner's Saltings makes a cracking morning walk before breakfast or a late-afternoon ramble when the light turns golden. It's the sort of Essex that doesn't make the postcards - which is exactly why it's worth the detour.
