Boney's Island

The forest at Boney's Island is one of those quiet Norfolk corners that barely registers on the mainstream radar - which is precisely why it's worth seeking out. Accessible from Beccles, this woodland stretch offers a proper escape into the kind of landscape that defines East Anglian character: dense in places, open in others, with the sort of light that seems to belong only to Norfolk in autumn.

There's no fanfare here. You're not coming for Instagram moments or heritage plaques. This is walker territory - anyone who appreciates a decent woodland trail without the crowds that clog honeypot sites will find something genuine. The paths are straightforward enough for families, though children who need constant stimulation might find the lack of facilities a touch dull. History enthusiasts sometimes spot traces of older usage scattered through, but don't expect interpretation boards explaining what you're looking at.

Free entry (as far as anyone can establish), no set hours, and you can potter about for an hour or half a day depending on mood. Spring birdsong is exceptional. Summer can feel a bit muggy. Winter and early spring offer the clearest views and fewest midges.

If you're based at any of the local glamping spots - Dawn Chorus Holidays or Hidden Meadows are both within walking distance - or the caravan sites at Wardley Hill or Henstead Fields, Boney's Island makes a proper half-morning adventure. It slots in well with wider Norfolk forest exploration rather than standing alone as a destination. Worth the detour from Beccles if you're already in the area.
