The Pound

The Pound sits just outside Beccles, a modest brick building that doesn't immediately announce itself as anything special. It's a working historic pound - the kind of place where stray livestock were once locked up until owners paid a fine to get them back. Properly unglamorous, but that's precisely what makes it interesting.

You can walk round it, peer through the gaps, and actually imagine the chaos of a farmer trudging into town to retrieve an escaped pig or wandering cow. The structure itself dates back centuries, and it's the sort of thing that brings everyday rural history into sharp focus. No interpretation boards, no gift shop, just the thing itself standing in the landscape.

Historians and anyone curious about how villages actually functioned will find it worth a detour. Kids might find it a bit underwhelming unless you're good at painting pictures of the past - there's not a lot of spectacle on offer. Realistically, you'd spend twenty minutes here, tops.

It's an ideal quick stop if you're based at one of the nearby campsites - The Wildings Elms Meadow is barely two miles away, or you could pair it with Beccles itself, which has more to offer. The surrounding countryside is proper gentle Norfolk, all open fields and quiet lanes. Free to look at, obviously. Best on a clear day when the light's decent for photographs.
