Boncyn Nadroedd

The walk up Boncyn Nadroedd from Ruthin doesn't exactly announce itself as a major undertaking, but the views from the top make it worth every steep bit. It's a proper hill rather than a gentle climb - the sort of walk that takes real effort but rewards you within an hour or so.

Once you're up there, you get panoramic vistas across Denbighshire that stretch for miles on clear days. The peak itself is modest by Welsh standards, but that's rather the point. You're not queuing or fighting for space like you would on the big names. It's peaceful, walkable, and genuinely rewarding for anyone who likes a bit of leg work without needing full mountaineering kit.

Historically minded types will get a kick from the old hill fort remains up there - the landscape tells a story if you know how to read it. Families with reasonably fit kids will manage it fine; toddlers and pram-pushers, less so.

The nearest base is Ruthin itself, a proper medieval market town with actual character. If you're staying at Clwydian Glamping Pods and Campsite nearby, this makes an excellent morning out before a lazy afternoon back at your pitch. Free to access, open year-round, and honestly worth fitting in if you're in the area. Allow two to three hours including a proper sit-down at the top. Best avoided during the wettest months - the path gets boggy and loses some of its appeal.
