Boncyn Foel-Bach

The walk up Boncyn Foel-Bach is a proper straightforward hill ramble from near Ruthin, with the kind of views that make the huff and puff worthwhile. It's not a dramatic peak - nothing like the showier Clwydian Range summits nearby - but it's got genuine appeal for anyone after a brisk morning's graft without needing rock-climbing gear.

You get decent panoramic views across Denbighshire once you're up there, with the surrounding moorland rolling away nicely on clear days. The approach is manageable for reasonably fit walkers; families with older kids who don't mind a steady climb would cope fine. Younger children might find the ascent a slog without the payoff of a dramatic summit tower or visitor facilities up top. There's nothing on the hill itself - no café, no interpretation boards, no facilities. It's just the walk and the view.

The nearest proper base would be Ruthin, which is handy for supplies and a decent pub afterwards. If you're staying at Clwydian Glamping Pods and Campsite just down the way, this makes an obvious half-day outing to break up the site-based holiday routine. Allow two to three hours from start to finish depending on your pace and how long you dawdle at the summit.

Go when the weather's clear - the views don't work on a claggy day, and the exposed moorland gets properly windy. Early morning in summer gives you the best light and the fewest fellow hikers tramping about.
