Bombers' Pond

A modest stretch of water just outside Maldon, Bombers' Pond is what it sounds like - a working gravel lake that's become something of a local secret for a peaceful hour or two. The name comes from the RAF bombers that trained here during the Second World War, though these days you're more likely to spot anglers, dog walkers, and the odd birdwatcher than aircraft.

It's not going to blow your mind. The water's ringed by scrubland and reeds, and the view is properly flat - this is Essex, after all. But that flatness is rather the point. There's something calming about it, especially on a quiet weekday morning when you've got the place nearly to yourself. You can walk the perimeter in about forty minutes if you're not dawdling, or settle on one of the benches and watch the ripples. In spring and autumn, migrating birds pass through, which keeps the binoculars brigade entertained.

Walkers and photographers will find it worthwhile. Family groups with young children might find it a bit samey after half an hour - there's no playground, no cafe, no distractions. If you're staying at Hoe Mill Lock nearby, it's absolutely worth combining with a stay here. You could easily tick it off in the morning before heading into Maldon for lunch.

Free to visit, no facilities on site. Go when the light's good and you won't regret the detour.
