Bomb Hole Drops

During the Second World War, a German bomb landed in woodland just outside Wokingham and left behind a crater so deep it's still visible today. That hole - now called Bomb Hole Drops - sits in what's become a proper little woodland walk, the sort of spot where you can actually feel the weight of history underfoot.

The crater itself is the draw. It's genuinely striking - a sudden depression in the forest floor that reminds you this land has a story beyond the commuter belt it's become. The walk to reach it takes maybe twenty minutes from the car park, winding through decent woodland with occasional glimpses of what was once farmland. It's not a strenuous trek, more a gentle amble, though the path can get boggy after rain.

This works best for history-minded visitors and walkers who appreciate context with their countryside. Kids might find the crater interesting for five minutes, then want to move on - it's not a playground or a major spectacle, just a hole and some trees. Bring decent footwear, especially in winter. The admission is free, and there's no formal visitor centre, which keeps it refreshingly low-key.

If you're camping at Warfield Park or Scotlands House Campsite nearby - both solid bases for the area - it's an easy side trip that justifies an afternoon walk. Bracknell is the nearest town for supplies. It won't eat up your whole day, but as part of a broader woodland exploration around Wokingham, it sits well enough.
