Sperry's Gyroscope

The gyroscope sitting in Wokingham is a proper piece of British engineering history - a working demonstration of Elmer Sperry's 1914 invention that basically revolutionised navigation. It's the sort of thing that stops you dead: a brass and steel contraption that defies gravity in a way that feels almost impossible until you see it spinning. You get to watch the thing in action, and it genuinely makes your brain hurt trying to work out what's happening.

It's not a massive attraction - you're looking at maybe 45 minutes to an hour, tops - so don't expect a day out on its own. But if you're the type who gets genuinely excited by how things work, or you've got older kids interested in physics, it's absolutely worth the detour from Bracknell. The technical stuff is explained reasonably well, though you'll get more out of it if you've got a passing interest in gyroscopic stabilisation already.

Free entry is likely (though worth checking ahead), and it's just off the main drag in Wokingham, making it a handy stop between the caravan parks scattered around the area - Scotlands House is barely over a mile away if you're based there. Winter's probably your best bet for a quieter experience. It's the kind of stop that makes a proper history buff's day rather than a general family outing, but if that's you, it's genuinely fascinating.
