Bolton Museum and Art Gallery

The building itself is rather grand - a proper Victorian structure right in Bolton town centre that commands your attention the moment you walk up. Inside, you'll find a decent spread of art and local history collections that justify a couple of hours, though it's not the kind of place that'll keep you rooted all afternoon.

The art gallery side focuses on British and European works from the 18th century onwards. There's Egyptian artefacts too, which always draw the kids. The museum section covers Bolton's industrial heritage - textile machinery, pottery, that sort of thing - which tells the story of how this town actually mattered once upon a time. It's all well-presented without feeling stuffy.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from it, particularly anyone interested in industrial Lancashire. Families with younger children might spend an hour here before restlessness sets in, depending on how engaged they are with dusty exhibits. The real plus is that admission is free, so you're not out of pocket if your visit is brief.

If you're based at Burrs Country Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just outside Bury, Bolton Museum is a decent half-day trip - roughly 20 minutes' drive from the site. Combine it with a walk through Bolton town centre or a coffee stop, and you've got a solid morning sorted. Go on a weekday if you can avoid the school groups. Parking's straightforward in the town centre.
