Bolgoed Quarry Nature Reserve

An old slate quarry turned woodland - that's the honest pitch for Bolgoed. It's run by Welsh Wildlife Trust, and what you get is a proper working nature reserve with forest trails threading through reclaimed land where industry used to dominate. The quarry pools are the main draw, dark water reflecting the steep sides of the worked slopes. It feels wild despite being just outside Llanelli.

Walkers will find genuine trails here rather than a manicured loop. The paths aren't brutal, but they're real - you'll get a sense of actual terrain rather than a municipal tick-box exercise. Birdwatchers should pack binoculars; the reserve supports nesting species and winter migrants that make the effort worthwhile. Kids might enjoy spotting dragonflies by the water rather than being glued to a phone, though don't expect a playground or visitor centre nonsense.

Access is free - no car park fee, no entry charge. Allow ninety minutes if you're taking it slowly and actually looking about. Go during spring or early summer when the birdlife is active and the forest canopy's filling out. Winter's drab if you're honest.

It works well as a morning walk if you're staying at River View Touring Park nearby. Not a full day's entertainment, but cracking for a proper stretch of the legs alongside something with actual ecological purpose rather than just being "somewhere to walk". The quarry landscape gives it character that standard woodland reserves lack.
