Blue Reef Aquarium

Sharks swim overhead through the impressive walk-through tunnel that forms the centrepiece of this Newquay aquarium. Blue Reef isn't massive, but it packs plenty into its compact space near the town centre, with everything from tropical reef displays to local Cornish marine life. The tunnel experience proper gets the adrenaline going, especially when the sand tiger sharks cruise past just inches from your head.

Families with young children will get the best value here - there's enough to keep little ones engaged for a couple of hours without overwhelming them. The touch pools go down well with kids who fancy getting their hands wet, and the feeding demonstrations add some theatre to proceedings. Open daily from 10am to 5pm, though entry prices aren't cheap for what's essentially a small regional aquarium.

Location-wise, it's well placed for a rainy day diversion when staying at any of the nearby holiday parks. Families at Hendra Holiday Park or the various Parkdean sites around Crantock Beach and Newquay will find it an easy drive into town. Worth combining with a wander around Newquay itself rather than making a special trip, but the kids will remember those sharks long after the holiday's over.
