The Gannel

Stepping across the footbridge from Crantock village, you'll find one of Cornwall's most underrated stretches of sand. The Gannel estuary creates a proper tidal playground where the River Gannel meets the Atlantic, offering something quite different from Newquay's main surf beaches just a couple of miles up the coast.

Low tide reveals vast expanses of golden sand perfect for building elaborate sandcastles, while rock pools along the estuary edges keep younger children fascinated for hours. The sheltered water on the river side stays calmer than the open sea, making it ideal for families with small kids who fancy a paddle without the Atlantic's punch.

Walkers will appreciate the coastal path that hugs the estuary - it's an easy stroll with lovely views back towards Newquay's headland. Dog owners particularly love this spot since four-legged friends can run free on much of the beach outside peak summer months.

Timing matters here. High tide covers most of the beach, so check the tidal times if you're planning a proper beach day. The walk from Crantock takes about ten minutes, or you can drive to the small car park though spaces fill up quickly in summer.
