Blue Lough

Getting to this remote mountain tarn requires a proper hike up from Newcastle through the Mournes - there's no easy drive-up option here. Blue Lough sits in a dramatic corrie beneath Slieve Donard, Northern Ireland's highest peak, and the walk up takes about two hours each way on rough mountain paths. Worth every step though.

Serious walkers and photographers will love this spot. The lake itself is small but stunning, surrounded by granite cliffs and offering views back down towards the coast that are absolutely cracking on a clear day. Families with young children might find the ascent a bit much - this isn't a casual stroll.

Bring proper walking boots and waterproofs as the weather can turn quickly up here. The path can be boggy in places, especially after rain. Early morning visits often reward you with the lough reflecting the surrounding peaks like a mirror, assuming the Irish weather plays ball.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Tollymore Campsite or Annalong Holiday Park, this makes for an excellent full-day adventure. The surrounding Mourne Mountains offer some of the best hiking in Ireland, and Blue Lough provides a worthy objective for experienced ramblers. Just don't expect facilities - pack everything you need and take your rubbish back down.
