Blue Lagoon Entrance

The Blue Lagoon sits just outside Milton Keynes - a proper striking spot that catches you off guard if you're not expecting it. It's a flooded chalk quarry that's turned into this vivid turquoise body of water, the colour so intense it looks almost unreal. You can walk right up to the entrance and get a good look at it, though access to the water itself is restricted for safety reasons - the chalk walls are unstable and the depth changes without warning.

It's worth the drive if you're camping nearby, particularly from The Old Dairy Farm Camping and Caravanning which is just over a mile away. The walk takes about ten minutes from the road, and on a decent day the contrast between the blue water and the white chalk is genuinely striking. Don't expect a full afternoon's activity - thirty minutes to an hour covers it properly. Photographers will find it worth the trip; kids enjoy spotting it for the first time, though they'll lose interest once they realize they can't swim in it.

The whole thing feels a bit surreal for Buckinghamshire - you're expecting countryside and suddenly there's this Mediterranean-looking lagoon. It's free to look at and there's a small car park nearby, though it gets busy on weekends.
