The National Museum of Computing

Walking into Bletchley Park to find the National Museum of Computing feels like stepping into the back rooms of tech history. This is where the serious stuff happened - actual working computers from the 1940s onwards, many of them firing up during demonstrations so you can see the mechanical guts doing their thing rather than just reading about it behind glass.

The museum spans several buildings across the estate, and you'll need a good three to four hours to do it properly. There's everything from the Colossus machines that cracked Nazi codes through to room-sized mainframes and early personal computers. If you've got a teenage computer science geek in tow, they'll lose entire hours here. Adults who remember their first computer tend to get a bit misty-eyed too.

It's hands-on in places - you can actually interact with some exhibits and watch restoration work happening. The volunteers who run it know their stuff and genuinely enjoy talking through the machines. Entry isn't free, but it's reasonable value given how much ground there is to cover.

Milton Keynes sits just five miles away, making it simple to slot into a wider park holiday. The Old Dairy Farm Camping and Caravanning is your closest base at 2.3 miles, or Gullivers Campsite if you want something with more family attractions bundled in. Rain doesn't bother the visit much since you're indoors the whole time - actually proper weather to be tucked inside examining 1950s computing.
