Bleaklow Stones

The walk up to Bleaklow Stones rewards you with one of the Pennines' most dramatic moorland vistas. These weathered gritstone outcrops sit at 2,000 feet, and on a clear day you can see for miles across South Yorkshire's high country - it's proper windswept and unforgiving, which is exactly why it works so well.

You'll need decent boots and waterproofs. The approach from Holmfirth is a solid moorland trek - around two hours up, depending on fitness. The stones themselves aren't a quick photo stop; they're more a landmark at the end of a proper walk. Walkers and hikers will get the most from this. Families with young legs might find the exposed ridge a bit relentless, though older kids keen on fell walking will love it.

There's nothing here but rock and heather, which is rather the point. The plateau stretches for miles in all directions, and Bleaklow Stones serve as a kind of marker in that vastness - a reminder you've made it to real high ground. Come on a clear morning if you can; the afternoon mist rolls in fast up here.

If you're camping nearby - Thurlmoor Farm and Whitegate Leisure are both five miles or so away - this makes a brilliant half-day adventure. Pair it with walks around the moorland edges lower down, or dip into Holmfirth for supplies and a café stop. It's not a tourist attraction with facilities. It's a mountain walk, full stop.
