Blea Rigg (Wainwright)

Blea Rigg is one of those Wainwright peaks that rewards you without demanding a full day's commitment. It's a proper fell walk from the Great Langdale valley - you're looking at roughly two hours to the summit if you're moving at a reasonable pace, less if you're quick. The peak itself sits at 902 metres and gives you that satisfying sense of height without the slog of the bigger fells nearby.

What makes it worth doing is the view back down into Langdale. On a clear day you get the whole valley spread out below, and the light changes constantly across the fell sides. It's nowhere near as crowded as Helvellyn or Scafell Pike, which is precisely why you should go. The route from Chapel Stile is straightforward enough - you won't need specialist kit, just proper boots and the usual fell walking sense.

This works brilliantly if you're based at one of the campgrounds in Great Langdale, barely ten minutes from the start. Great Langdale Glamping and the main Great Langdale Campsite are ideally positioned if you want to combine a morning walk with afternoon exploring elsewhere. It's the kind of fell that families with older kids can manage, though it's steep in places and the weather can turn quickly.

Allow four hours round trip if you want a leisurely summit brew. There's no charge - it's open access fell walking. Best done on a clear morning before the valley gets too busy.
