Blea Moor

The walk up Blea Moor from Carnforth is straightforward enough, but the moorland itself is genuinely bleak - in the best possible sense. You're looking at open fell with proper views across the Morecambe Bay estuary and the Lakeland fells beyond, which on a clear day feels almost too generous for what's essentially a modest climb.

It's not a dramatic peak by any stretch. The summit sits at around 1,000 feet, and there's no scrambling or technical nonsense involved. What you get instead is wide-open space and that particular Yorkshire moorland atmosphere - windswept, slightly austere, occasionally moody depending on the weather. On a grey afternoon it can feel quite atmospheric; on a bright day it's genuinely pleasant.

Walkers will have the most obvious time here. The route itself is manageable for reasonably fit families, though younger kids might find the exposed moorland a bit wearing on a windy day. There's nothing to do once you're up there except soak in the view and turn round, so it's not a destination that rewards lingering.

Pitching a tent at Philpin Farm Campsite three and a half miles away makes sense logistically. The site has decent reviews, and Blea Moor works as a proper moorland break from the usual park routine - gives you an actual walk with genuine altitude and space, rather than another circuit around a visitor attraction. Allow two to three hours round trip depending on pace and how long you dawdle at the top.
