Blatchford Down

Standing at roughly 200 metres above sea level, this elevated chunk of the Surrey Hills delivers proper views across the Weald without the tourist crowds you'll find elsewhere. The short walk up from Westcott village takes maybe twenty minutes through mixed woodland, emerging onto open downland that feels surprisingly wild for somewhere so close to London. On a clear day you can see right across to the South Downs - though admittedly on grey winter afternoons it's just rolling fields disappearing into mist. Dog walkers and serious ramblers make up most of the foot traffic here. Families with young children might find the uphill trudge a bit much, but older kids who can manage the gradient will love the space to run about once you reach the top. The area forms part of several longer walking routes, so you'll often spot hikers with proper boots and Ordnance Survey maps tucked under their arms. Access is free and unrestricted, which is refreshing in an area where some viewpoints charge for parking. Early morning or late afternoon visits work best for photography, when the light catches the folds of the landscape properly. If you're staying at one of the nearby camping spots like Surrey Hills Yurts or Hammonds Glamping, it makes for a decent leg-stretcher that won't eat up your entire day.
