Blashford Lakes Nature Reserve

Blashford Lakes sits just outside Ringwood and is genuinely one of those places where you actually forget you're in southern England. A string of former gravel pits now transformed into freshwater lakes, it's become a serious draw for bird-watchers and anyone who fancies a proper walk without the crowds.

You get five lakes spread across 155 acres, connected by paths that loop around the water. The viewing platforms are well-positioned - you'll spot great crested grebes, herons, and if you're lucky, the occasional kingfisher darting through. Winter brings migrant waders; spring and summer are quieter but lovely for a ramble. It's the kind of place where an hour becomes three hours because you keep stopping to check what's just landed on the water.

Families with patient kids will do well here - it's flat, no entrance fees I'm aware of, and the paths are straightforward. Birdwatchers will absolutely love it. Walkers looking for something meditative rather than strenuous should make it a morning visit. Allow two hours minimum if you want to see the whole reserve properly, longer if you've brought binoculars and a field guide.

Stays at Fernwood Glamping or Ashley Heath Caravan Park put you within striking distance. The reserve pairs nicely with a New Forest holiday - you're only twenty minutes from the main attractions but a world away from the tourist hustle. Go midweek if you can; weekends can get a bit busy with the local crowd.
