Blaen-Y-Clawdd-Du

The walk up Blaen-Y-Clawdd-Du isn't long, but it demands respect. This peak sits above Llanidloes in Powys, and on a clear day the views across Mid Wales justify the effort - rolling moorland stretching towards the Cambrian Mountains, with proper silence once you're away from the road.

It's moorland walking rather than a scramble, so families with reasonable legs can manage it. The terrain is open and exposed, which means weather changes fast. I'd allow two hours return from the nearest car park, depending on fitness and how long you linger at the top. There's nothing up there - no café, no facilities - so bring water and something to eat.

This isn't a destination that'll occupy half your day. It's a solid morning walk for people who enjoy being outdoors without needing a visitor centre or a shop at the end. Walkers staying at Glangwy Farm Camping just three miles away could fit this in alongside exploring the Llanidloes area - the town itself has decent pubs and shops if you need supplies before heading up. Ty Llewelyn Glamping is a touch further out but offers a good base for tackling multiple walks in the region.

Worthwhile if you're already in the area and want straightforward hill time. Not worth a special trip from further afield unless you're doing a proper walking week in Mid Wales. The moorland has its own appeal though - bleak and beautiful in equal measure.
