Blackwater Rig

The walk up Blackwater Rig rewards you with proper views across the Lowlands, though it's not one of those dramatic Scottish peaks that stops you dead in your tracks. It's more of a genuine hill walker's day out than a destination attraction - the sort of place you head to when you want fresh air and honest graft without needing a rope or specialist kit.

From Biggar, it's an accessible enough drive into the surrounding moorland. The ascent itself is straightforward enough, though you'll want decent boots given the boggy sections. The summit gives you a real sense of space, with sight lines stretching across to the Southern Uplands on a clear day. It's the kind of walk that leaves you properly tired but satisfied.

Most people doing this are walkers rather than casual tourists. Families with older kids would manage fine, but younger ones might find the hour-plus trudge a bit much. There's nothing to "do" once you're up there except stand about, take photos, and enjoy being knackered in a good way.

If you're based at Mount View Caravan Park just down the road, it makes for a solid half-day outing. Pack a flask, bring a map, and don't expect facilities at the summit - there's nothing up there at all. The whole expedition takes roughly three hours depending on fitness and how long you linger. Worth it if you're in the area and like walking. Not worth a special trip if you're not.
