Blacksmiths Pond

A modest water body just outside Henlow, Blacksmiths Pond is the sort of place that rewards a quiet morning visit rather than a scheduled afternoon trip. The water's shallow and reed-lined, attracting birdwatchers and the occasional angler. You won't find tourist infrastructure here - no cafes, no visitor centre, just the pond and whatever wildlife has shown up that day.

It's decent enough if you're already exploring the Hertfordshire countryside, particularly if you're based at Radwell Lake campsite nearby. Birdwatchers will get more from it than casual walkers. The walk around takes perhaps thirty minutes without rushing, which means it works as a gentle warm-up rather than a destination in itself.

Winter and early spring tend to bring the most bird activity - teal, pochard, and the odd heron. Summer's quieter, with families more likely to head somewhere with actual facilities. There's no charge as far as I can tell, and no formal opening hours either.

If you're camping at Radwell Lake or doing a wider loop through Hertfordshire's quieter spots, Blacksmiths Pond fits the bill. But it's not worth a special trip from elsewhere. Think of it as a pleasant fifteen-minute detour between more substantial attractions, not a destination on its own.
