Franklin Recreation Ground

The Franklin Recreation Ground is a proper nature reserve just outside Henlow, where you can wander through woodland and grassland without the crowds you'd get at the big country estates. Footpaths wind through scrubby woodland, and if you're lucky you'll spot woodland birds and maybe a roe deer if you're quiet about it. There's open grassland too, good for a straightforward walk without too much climbing. The whole thing feels genuinely low-key, not manicured or fenced off to death. Free to visit, naturally, and you can do it in an hour or take two if you're in no rush. Best in spring when the bluebells come through, though honestly it's decent year-round. Worth combining with a stay at one of the nearby lakes - Henlow Bridge Lakes is only four miles away and gives you a proper base. The reserve itself won't keep you for a full day unless you're properly into bird-watching, but it's the sort of walk that clears your head, no nonsense. Families with young kids will find it manageable but not thrilling - it's more about the quiet time than the spectacle.
