Blacklaw Hill

The walk up Blacklaw Hill takes roughly forty minutes from the car park near Cupar, and it's one of those Perthshire climbs that feels properly rewarding without being punishing. Once you've crested the summit, the views across Fife open up in a way that makes the slightly boggy middle section entirely forgivable.

It's a straightforward hill walk rather than anything dramatic - you're looking at moorland terrain with a decent track for most of the ascent. The summit itself gives you a genuine sense of being somewhere, rather than just another viewpoint. On a clear day, the perspective across the Tay Valley and towards the Sidlaws is genuinely good. Walkers after a proper half-day outing will get real value from it, and it's the sort of hill that works just as well for someone easing into hillwalking as it does for those wanting a quicker leg-stretcher.

There's nothing fancy waiting for you at the top - no cafe, no visitor centre, no crowds. Which is precisely why it's worth doing. The real appeal is the combination of accessible terrain and actual views, without the bothersome tourism infrastructure.

If you're based at South Valleyfield Certificated Site just five or so miles away, this makes a cracking morning expedition. Park near Cupar, allow three hours including a leisurely summit sit-down, and you'll be back for a proper lunch. Best attempted when the ground isn't waterlogged - autumn or spring tend to work better than wet summer weeks.
