Blackheath Woods

The woods sit just inland from Lowestoft, a proper stretch of woodland that feels properly removed from the seafront bustle despite being barely a mile away. This is ancient Suffolk landscape - broadleaf trees, muddy paths, and the kind of quiet you don't get near seaside towns. Walking here takes you through dappled shade with plenty of natural features to spot if you're the type who notices things. There's no visitor centre or facilities as far as I can tell, so come prepared. Locals use it regularly and it's completely free.

Best for walkers and anyone wanting a bit of woodland breathing space without the theatre of a formal nature reserve. Kids will enjoy it if they're the exploring sort, though there's not much to keep them engaged for hours - you're looking at a solid hour's walk rather than an afternoon activity. Bring wellies if it's been wet; the paths get boggy. The light in autumn is particularly good, slanting through the canopy and making the whole place feel rather atmospheric.

If you're staying at Pakefield Holiday Park, you're practically on the doorstep - less than a mile away. The Hollies is similarly close. Further afield, Azure Seas and Broadland Sands give you a good base for exploring this part of the coast while having woodland walks within easy reach. Go early morning if you want solitude, or late afternoon when the angle of light makes it worth your while.
