Blackfriars Priory

What remains of Blackfriars Priory in Gloucester is essentially a Dominican friary from the 13th century - mostly ruins now, but enough survives to give you a genuine sense of medieval religious life. The stone work is substantial enough that you can walk through and actually picture the monks going about their day, which beats staring at a flat photograph any time.

You'll find it right in Gloucester itself, which makes it a natural add-on if you're already in town visiting the cathedral or the docks. The ruins don't demand hours - forty minutes to an hour is realistic if you're actually paying attention to the layout rather than just wandering aimlessly. History types will get more out of it than casual visitors; there's no interpretation boards or fancy presentation, so you need to bring a bit of imagination to the party.

Admission appears to be free, which is fair given what's left to see. Best time to visit is probably late spring or early autumn when the weather's decent enough to linger and the light catches the stonework properly.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Court Farm Camping is closest at under three miles - it's an easy drive or bike ride into Gloucester proper. Pair it with the cathedral and maybe a walk along the Quays, and you've got a solid afternoon. On its own, though, it's more of a quick stop than a destination. Worth the detour if you're into medieval architecture, but don't rearrange your whole trip around it.
