Blackfriars Priory

Standing stones and crumbling walls are all that remain of this 13th-century Dominican friary, tucked away in Hereford's residential streets. The ruins feel oddly suburban now, surrounded by modern housing that makes the medieval stonework seem all the more remarkable. You'll find fragments of the church walls, parts of the cloister, and enough masonry to get a sense of how substantial this place once was.

History buffs will appreciate the significance - this was one of England's most important Dominican houses before Henry VIII's dissolution. The remaining architecture shows typical medieval construction, with some lovely stone tracery still visible in what's left of the windows. Kids might find it a bit dry unless they're already keen on castles and old buildings.

Access seems to be open, though information on site is fairly limited. You're looking at maybe 30 minutes to walk around and take it all in properly. The location in central Hereford makes it an easy addition to a day exploring the cathedral city, and it's well within reach of several camping spots around the area. Ridge Hill and Broadmeadow Glamping are both under four miles away, making this a straightforward detour for families staying in the Herefordshire countryside. Worth a quick look if you're already in town, but probably not worth a special journey on its own.
