Blackfriars

The ruins of a 13th-century Dominican friary sit quietly in central Oxford, just off the High Street. You won't find crowds here - most visitors walk straight past without realising what they're looking at. What remains are fragments of stone walls and arches, enough to give you a sense of the friary's scale at its height, though not enough to fully reconstruct it in your mind without some effort.

It's free to wander round, and you can do it in ten minutes if you're in a rush, though thirty is better if you want to take in the architectural details and read the information boards. The site works best for history types - particularly those interested in medieval religious life and Oxford's role as a centre of learning. Families with young children might find it underwhelming; there's not much to do beyond looking at old stonework. Walker's heading into the city from Cedar Hollow Oxford or Valley Farm Campsite nearby will stumble across it easily enough.

The real value is in timing it as part of a broader Oxford wander. Visit Blackfriars alongside the colleges and the Bodleian, or pair it with a afternoon at Port Meadow. It's the kind of place that feels more rewarding when you've already spent a few hours in the city and understand Oxford's medieval texture. On a grey afternoon it's properly atmospheric. Summer crowds can make the surrounding streets feel cramped, so aim for shoulder season if you can.
