Blackdown

The highest point in Surrey doesn't announce itself. You'll reach Blackdown - all 919 metres of it - and find yourself on a wooded ridge with views that stretch across three counties on a clear day. The actual summit is marked by a modest stone, easy to miss if you're not looking, surrounded by beech and yew trees that make the whole thing feel more intimate than grand.

It's a proper walker's destination rather than a destination for the destination itself. The appeal is the walk - about two hours from Haslemere if you're doing the classic route - through quiet Surrey woodland, emerging at the top to that sudden openness. On weekends you'll share it with locals, which says something about how good the circuit is.

The view isn't going to blow your mind if you're expecting Alpine drama. This is the South East - rolling countryside, a hint of the Weald, nothing showy. But that's exactly why it works. It's real walking in accessible hills, not a tourist trap. Families with decent hill legs will manage it fine; young children will find it a long haul for what is ultimately just trees and a clearing.

Blackdown sits nicely within reach of Little Cowdray Farm Glamping, making it an easy morning or afternoon walk from a park stay. No admission fees, no facilities at the top - bring water. Go midweek if you can. The place transforms when the weekend crowds clear out.
