About Black Wood

Dense woodland hemmed in by the Basingstoke Canal on one side and the suburban sprawl of Reading on the other - Black Wood is one of those places that feels properly wild even though you're never more than a few minutes from civilization. It's ancient forest, the sort where the trees have been here for centuries and the canopy gets thick enough that you'll want to visit after rain just to see how moody it gets.

You're looking at straightforward woodland walking here. There are paths through the trees, nothing especially dramatic or engineered - just the chance to get under cover and away from the noise of the town. Families will find it manageable, though the paths can get boggy and proper boots aren't a bad shout. Serious walkers might find it a touch limiting as a destination on its own, but paired with Wellington Country Park just three and a half miles away, you've got a solid half-day sorted.

The Basingstoke Canal runs alongside, which adds a bit of interest - watching narrowboats potter past while you're deep in the trees is oddly satisfying. Spring brings bluebells if you time it right, though by midsummer the woodland floor gets a bit dull and overgrown.

Go early morning if you can. The place gets quieter then, and you'll hear the birds properly. Two hours is enough to get the feel of it without overdoing things. It's free to walk through and accessible year-round, though winter mud can be considerable. Worth the detour if you're based at Wellington Country Park and want a proper forest walk without the drive.
