Black Rock Viewpoint

The walk up to Black Rock Viewpoint from Pitlochry isn't particularly long, but it's steep enough to make you work for the reward. Once you crest the hill, though, the Tummel Valley spreads out below in a way that makes the huffing and puffing entirely worthwhile. On a clear day the views stretch for miles - proper Highland scenery without needing to trek into serious mountain territory.

This is one for walkers rather than casual strollers. The path can be muddy and the gradient doesn't ease up much, so proper boots and maybe a walking pole or two aren't overkill. Most people allow 45 minutes to an hour for the climb, depending on fitness. The payoff is the kind of panoramic view that makes you understand why people keep coming back to Perthshire.

It works well as a half-day activity if you're basing yourself in the area - especially if you're staying at Glengoulandie Camping & Caravanning just a few miles away. You could easily combine it with a walk round Pitlochry itself or a visit to the nearby Edradour distillery if you fancy something less strenuous afterwards. Kids aged eight and up will manage the climb fine, though younger ones might find it tedious. There's no entry fee and no specific opening hours - it's just a public right of way that's accessible year-round, though winter can make the path treacherous. Go on a weekday morning if you can; weekends draw the crowds and the car park fills quickly.
