Black Ridge

The walk up Black Ridge from Okehampton hits you with proper moorland views the moment you leave the car park. It's not a long slog - most people manage it in under two hours - but the exposed ridge walk itself demands respect. On a clear day, you can see right across Dartmoor's wild heart, which makes the effort worth every step.

What you're really getting here is raw Devon moorland without the crowds you'd find at more famous peaks. The ridge itself is properly dramatic, with steep drops on either side and wind that genuinely takes your breath away. It's the sort of place where you understand why people actually choose to walk for pleasure rather than just to reach a viewpoint.

Walkers and anyone who enjoys genuine upland scenery will get far more from Black Ridge than casual day-trippers. It's not a stroll with ice cream at the end. The ground is rough, the weather changes fast, and you'll want decent boots. Families with younger children might find the exposed sections a bit much.

If you're staying at Lydford Caravan & Camping Park just five miles away, this makes an excellent morning or afternoon walk. It fits properly into a wider Dartmoor exploration - you could easily combine it with Lydford Gorge or other local walks without feeling rushed. Allow a couple of hours total and bring a packed lunch if the weather looks settled. There's no facilities on the hill itself.
