Black Hill

Standing at just 154 metres, Black Hill won't challenge any serious fell-walkers, but what it lacks in altitude it makes up for in accessibility and surprising views. This gentle heathland summit sits on the edge of the New Forest, offering panoramic views across to the Isle of Wight on clear days and down towards Christchurch and the coast.

The walk up takes about 20 minutes from the nearest car park, following well-marked paths through typical New Forest terrain of gorse and heather. Kids will love spotting the ponies that graze freely here, though do keep them at a respectful distance. The summit itself is marked by a small cairn and provides a lovely spot for a picnic.

Families staying at nearby sites like Holmsley Campsite or Setthorns Campsite will find this a perfect gentle introduction to the New Forest's walking opportunities. It's free to access year-round, though spring brings the best wildflower displays and autumn offers proper New Forest colours. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip if you're taking it steady.

Honestly, it's not the most dramatic peak you'll ever climb, but for a quick leg-stretch that gets everyone away from screens and into fresh air, Black Hill does the job nicely.
