Black Heath

Rolling moorland stretches as far as the eye can see from this proper Staffordshire peak, where the views take in the Churnet Valley and beyond towards the Peak District proper. Black Heath sits at a decent height above Stoke-on-Trent, offering walkers a solid workout and rewarding panoramas that make the climb worthwhile.

Families with older children will find the walk manageable, though younger ones might struggle with the steeper sections. The terrain can get boggy after rain, so decent boots are essential. On a clear day, you can pick out the distinctive landmarks of the Potteries below, while the wild moorland feels wonderfully remote despite being so close to urban areas.

Walkers and photographers get the most from this spot - the light across the heath at sunrise and sunset is particularly lovely. Allow a couple of hours for a proper exploration, longer if you want to extend the walk across the surrounding countryside. Free access means it's perfect for a morning expedition before returning to your base.

Several caravan sites sit within easy reach, including Alton's Star Camping site just over three miles away. The Cross country park and Intake Farm Campsite also make good bases for exploring this corner of Staffordshire, putting you within striking distance of both the moorland walks and Alton's more famous attractions.
