Black Down Wood

A proper woodland walk that delivers without the hype. Black Down Wood sits just outside Taunton and offers what you'd expect from a Somerset forest - dense trees, decent paths, and enough quiet to actually hear yourself think. The woodland floor is thick with leaf litter, and if you time it right in autumn the colour is genuinely worth the trip.

It's the sort of place walkers actually enjoy rather than tolerate. The paths are well-maintained, there are sections open enough to feel airy and others properly atmospheric. You're looking at an hour to ninety minutes for a solid walk depending on which route you take. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so bring what you need.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after forty minutes - it's forest, relentlessly, with no water features or dramatic viewpoints to break things up. Older children and proper walkers will get more from it. The real appeal is for anyone staying at Warren Bay Holiday Village, Haven Doniford Bay, or Hoburne Blue Anchor - it's close enough for a morning out without faffing about with long drives.

Free access as far as I can tell, no entry fees. Go in the early morning if you want to avoid other people entirely. Late September through October is when it really sings. Winter's fine too if you don't mind damp undergrowth and mud. Summer? Bit muggy and lacking atmosphere between the trees.
