Black Corner Plantation

The woods around Black Corner Plantation feel properly remote for somewhere just outside Stockton-on-Tees. You're walking through dense conifer plantations - mostly Scots pine and spruce - with the kind of quiet that makes you realise how little noise there actually is in a working forest.

It's not dramatic landscape stuff. No viewpoints, no dramatic drops or sudden clearings. What you get instead is the steady satisfaction of forest walking - the soft ground underfoot, the smell of pine needles, and the occasional glimmer of light through the canopy. Ramblers and dog walkers will be genuinely happy here. Kids might find it a bit samey after half an hour unless they're the type who enjoy spotting wildlife or collecting interesting sticks.

The paths are decent and well-maintained, though muddy in winter. Allow a couple of hours if you're doing a proper loop rather than just a quick spin. There's something quite meditative about it, especially midweek when you might have the place largely to yourself.
