Birnam Highland Games Park

The Highland Games Park at Birnam sits just outside Dunkeld and celebrates the traditions that have drawn crowds to Perthshire for generations. It's not a sprawling theme park - more a focused space dedicated to the culture and athleticism of Scottish Highland Games, with displays and information about the events, athletes, and history that make these competitions special.

You'll find exhibits on the throwing events - the caber toss, stone put, hammer throw - and the men and women who've made their names competing in them. It's genuinely interesting if you've ever wondered how people manage to hurl a telephone pole through the air or why these strange competitions matter so much to Highland culture. Families with children aged eight and up tend to get the most from it; younger kids might lose interest after thirty minutes or so.

The park works brilliantly as part of a broader Dunkeld visit. You're minutes from Inver Mill Farm Caravan Park, which is first-rate for a base, and Erigmore Holiday Park is barely further afield. Spend a morning here, then walk the cathedral grounds or push into the Tay Valley - Birnam Wood is right there, made famous by Macbeth.
