Birdoswald Roman Fort

The remains of Birdoswald sit right on Hadrian's Wall itself, which is genuinely impressive when you realise you're standing on a frontier that once divided the Roman Empire from the Scottish wilderness. This isn't a reconstructed fort with actors in togas - it's the real thing, with substantial stone foundations still visible after nearly two thousand years.

You get to walk the actual ramparts and explore what was once a garrison of around five hundred soldiers. The museum building does a decent job explaining who lived here and why, though I'll be honest - the artifacts are decent rather than exceptional. What makes it worth the trip is the landscape. Stand on the fort walls and you can see for miles across Northumberland, and you understand instantly why the Romans chose this spot to defend against raids from the north.

Allow a couple of hours minimum, longer if you're keen on the walking routes that connect to other Wall sites nearby. Haltwhistle, just five miles away, makes a logical base - it's got proper amenities and sits at the heart of Hadrian's Wall country. The Haltwhistle Camping and Caravanning Club Site is within striking distance, as is Herding Hill Farm if you fancy a touch more comfort with their glamping setup.

This works best for anyone serious about Roman history or the Wall itself. Younger kids might flag after thirty minutes without the hands-on stuff they get at bigger attractions. Weather can be brutal - bring waterproofs as a matter of course.
