Birdlip Hill

The Cotswold Edge rises sharply just south of Cheltenham, and Birdlip Hill is where the landscape properly declares itself. You're looking at a limestone escarpment that drops away southeast toward the Severn Vale, with views stretching across to the Forest of Dean on clear days. It's not a scramble or a technical walk - more a straightforward climb from the village below that takes the better part of an hour depending on fitness and how often you stop.

The thing that catches you first is how abruptly the ground falls away. Stand near the trig point and you're genuinely high up, even though the hill itself only nudges 1000 feet. Walkers get the most from this spot, particularly anyone tackling longer routes along the Cotswold Way or exploring the broader Edge. Families with younger kids might find the walk up a bit of a slog, and there's not much at the summit itself beyond the views and a decent breeze.

It's free to visit and takes a couple of hours if you include the walk up and back. Spring and early autumn beat summer for views - less atmospheric haze between you and the Severn. If you're camped at Cherry Tree Glamping or staying elsewhere around Cheltenham, this deserves a morning or afternoon. You'll pass through proper Cotswold village country getting there, and the walk itself is on established paths. Worth doing while the weather holds.
