Birdhope Camps

The Roman camps at Birdhope sit on rough moorland near Otterburn, a spot that rewards the effort of finding it. Two temporary marching camps from the 1st or 2nd century AD are visible as earthwork ditches in the heather - you won't see standing stones or reconstructed buildings, but the scale of them makes the Roman military presence suddenly real.

Walking the perimeter, you get a sense of how vast these camps were, how quickly the legions could have thrown them up, and just how far north they pushed into what is now Scotland. It's not a manicured heritage site with interpretation boards and a café. The moorland itself is the draw - wide, windswept, empty apart from the archaeology beneath your feet.

This is squarely for history types and serious walkers. Families with young kids might find it a bit sparse unless they're already keen on Roman Britain. Allow an hour or so to properly explore both camps; good boots are essential after rain, as the ground gets boggy. There's no admission charge and no opening hours to speak of - you turn up as you please.
